Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Sunday, 28 Oct 2007: New Zealand's 16 year old Ricky Wells thrilled thousands with dominant skills to win Asia's first ever FIM sanctioned speedway event held in Malaysia, the Malaysian International Speedway Cup, in Kuala Lumpur last night (27th Oct). He scored the maximum 12 points in the heats and recorded the fastest ever time at Speedway Malaysia's Family Park track with a time of 56.68s in heat 3.

Sam Taylor, 26, also from New Zealand but competing under the Australian flag won 2 heats and scored 12 points in the preliminar heats, tried hard to beat Wells in the grand final race but had to settle for second.

Competing for Britain after a long layoff from speedway, Linden Warner beat Japan's Hideaki Ota to third to grab the last podium spot.

Five young Malaysians who had never riden a 500cc speedway bike before 5 weeks ago could not match the winners over four laps but they won the crowd's and the foreign riders respect as they were able to race them for the initial laps.

Eighteen year old Mohd Helmey Hamzah eventually won the consolation final to win the coveted "best Malaysian" trophy from 21 year old reserve rider Mohd Ariff Mohd Ali. Ariff replaced Rody Sofian Buang after Rody had to retire from a recurring collar bone problem after a fall in heat 4.

The glittering prize presentation ceremony complete with the raising of the national flags and the winner's national anthem and confetti was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Youth & Sports Malaysia, Dato' Liow Tiong Lai.

At the post event press conference after his win, a jubilant Wells praised the Malaysian organisers and the Malaysian rookies for putting up a very good show saying, "This is my first international and I'm very happy to be on the record as the first ever winner of a first winner of an Asia Speedway Cup. The organising was very slick and the Malaysian boys amazed me with their performance as they had so little time on a proper speedway bike before this as compared to my 8 years in the sport. The sport can go very far in Malaysia."

“It was not an easy win … Sam was very fast as well and always pushing me from behind and I had to stay focus and push all the way throughout the race,” added Wells, whose achievement list included the 2007 US under-21 overall champion and the US Youth National Champion titles in 2005 and 2004.

Taylor had similar praises for the Malaysians, "I was here in July to demo the 500cc speedway bike in Malaysia's first ever speedsway event when not a single Malaysian has ever riden in speedway before. They had then just started on the 115cc small bikes. In a little over 3 months and a bit, they suddenly have a dozen Malaysian capable of racing with riders with 8 and more years experience. The Malaysians will definitely be giving us a big hurry up in next year's Malaysian International Speedway Cup."

“Looking at the event, I feel that the prospect of the sports progressing further is very good. The cost of having the speedway tracks and organizing the races are quite low as compared to many other events,” said Deputy Minister of Youth & Sports Dato' Liow, who also proposed that speedway tracks be built in all the states to popularize the sport further.

“Speedway racing has proven to be a popular sport among our youths especially among our rempits (illegal road racers).There is definitely a huge market for the sport and I hope more parties will come forward and play their part in promoting this sport,” he added.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Best rider, 18 year old Muhammad Helmy Hamzah thanked his family and friends for his achievement. “Speedway has changed me from a former rempit (illegal road racer) to a professional rider. This sport has taught me to be a disciplined and a better person. It’s the best thing that has happened to me,” he said.

Representing Speedway Malaysia, Hanifah Yoong said the good progress of this new sport of speedway in Malaysia owes it's success to many people and organisations, "Without the foresight of the Minister of Youth & Sports Malaysia, Dato' Seri Azalina to support the implementation of the speedway project, the invaluable advice of Ivan Mauger, the support of the FIM and AAM, the training of key officials by Matthias Rohde and the coacing of Linden Warner as well as the dedication of the scores of officials and riders, we will not be here tonight celebrating the year's efforts in this prestigious and historical event which Malaysia made her mark."

Speedway Malaysia also announced that next season's 2008 calendar will be released shortly before the end of November.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia– Monday, 30 September 2007: Seasoned racer Nazrie Ramli won an action-packed and dramatic Round 4 of the NFC Open Speedway Malaysia 2007 at the Malaysian Speedway Circuit near the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex last night to take the overall crown of Malaysia’s newest motor racing series.

Nazrie, 28 of Team Titiwangsa who also races go-karts and saloon cars, kept his composure to win a hugely tense final race, which was twice restarted after the riders got themselves entangled and crashed as they attacked the corners in their efforts to surge ahead of their rivals.

“It was a very hard and very tense final race. Everybody was equally good and everybody desperately wants to win. Everybody was trying to get the best racing line and I am glad that I eventually won the race,” said Nazrie, who also won Round 3 a fortnight ago and ended the championship with a massive 46 points to take the overall title.

Mohd Azlan Abdullah of Nova Racing Team who finished third for the round, took second overall with 36 points while Azmi Kaseran of Team Seri Putera is third in the overall standings with 35 points. Scoring his first podium win with second placing at Round 4 last night, Nova Racing’s Amli Jamat is fourth overall with 33 points.

Watched by nine-time world Speedway champion and Speedway Malaysia’s Rider Development Director Ivan Mauger together with some 500 Speedway fans, Nazrie intelligently focused on his strategy by taking things easy in the heats, to finish fifth to place himself among the 10 qualifiers for the semi-finals.

“When I first tried this new event, I sincerely did not believe that I would end up as the overall champion. It’s a dream come true. I like to thank my family, friends and team members as well as the guidance and patience of the Speedway coaches – Ivan Mauger and Linden Warner. I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart,” said Nazrie.

“Now that I am champion, I aim to go all the way…to do my best in the Malaysian National Speedway Championship and then hopefully be selected to represent Malaysia at the first ever FIM Malaysian International Speedway Cup,” he added.

Unlike the NFC Speedway Championships and the upcoming national event where riders would compete on the 115cc Speedway machines, the international championship would be competed on the powerful Speedway 500cc bikes.

Built by Speedway Malaysia, the machines had already been tested upon by Nazrie and six other selected riders since early September to prepare them for the Oct 27 event.

A total of six teams competed in last night’s race. The teams are Team Titiwangsa, Team Maxi Alpha, Nova Racing Team, Team Seri Putra, Team Motivasi and Team Samudera. Last night’s race was also the finale of the NFC Speedway championships. Organised by the Malaysia Motorsports Organisers and Competitors Association (MMOCA) and promoted by Speedway Malaysia, the NFC Speedway Championships series were held every Saturday night from July 21 at the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex’s Speedway Circuit.

The twelve top Speedway riders from the championships will compete in the Malaysian National Speedway Championship on 20 and 21 October. Speedway Malaysia has also shortlisted seven riders to be evaluated by Ivan Mauger. Of the seven, four riders will be selected to represent Malaysia in the the FIM Malaysian International Speedway Cup 2007 on Oct 27.

Temerloh's Azizi pips Haniff to the Under 25 title

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Monday, 24 September 2007: Team Samudera’s Azizi Anuar pipped Mohd Haniff Borhan to win the overall NFC Speedway under 25 Championship after winning last night's final round of the Under 25 NFC championship. Both Azizi and Haniff finished the championship on level points of 42 but Azizi took the title by virtue of his two wins in round 3 and 4 to Haniff's one win in round 2.

“I'm absolutely thrilled to secure a double win tonight. It's the best moment in my life. I knew before the race that it would be tough and I just told myself to go for it and win this Round. I’d never thought about winning the overall title too, never, not even a second. I thank God, my family and coach Linden Warner for my win. Everything worked perfectly today. I was fast at the beginning and able to avoid many clashes. Unbelievable!” exclaimed Azizi who travels from Temerloh in Pahang for the races in the Speedway Malaysia circuit in Kuala Lumpur each week.

A devastated Haniff could not avoid his tears as he finished fourth in round 4 when all he needed was a third finishing spot to clinch the Under 25 title.

In last night's final round, Azizi silenced Sunday night’s supporters of Haniff as he extended his gap from the start. Team Seri Putra’s Mohd Ariff Mohd Ali was the only rider able to keep up with Azizi but his challenge fell off as the race proceeded. “Azizi is quick and on top of that he rode very well today. He deserves to be champion,” said Mohd Ariff who finished second and third overall with 38 points.

Another surprise performance of the night came from Team Titiwangsa’s Mohd Emy Nordin Ahmad who charted his first podium win by winning third. "I really wanted to get a good result and I definitely didn't like losing in the finals like in the previous rounds. I’m glad I gave my all to win a podium spot once," said Mohd Emy who is fourth overall in the championship.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia– Sunday, 23 September 2007: Spurred by some 1000 hometown supporters from Sijangkang, a village situated 80 km from the city, mechanic Mohd Abdussobur Turino of Nova Racing Team penned his name as the first overall champion of the NFC Speedway Championship Under 21 category.

Leading the championship with 34 points on the night, Mohd Abdussobur wrapped the title in style by winning Saturday night’s Round 4 to the cheers of his adoring fans which included Sijangkang State Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Fatah Iskandar and family members.

“This win is amazing. I want to thank my family, Datuk Abdul Fatah and everybody who has been following my career, this is a dream come true,” said Mohd Abdussobur who garnered a total haul of 46 points. Muhammad Helmey Hamzah of Team Seri Putra was second with 42 points and Team Samudera’s Asrul Khairin Azizan third with 30 points.

“The pressure was on me all the time. I got a good start and I was flying in the first heat but then I started to struggle in Heat 2 and 3. The bike was skipping around and after 4 heats I dropped to fourth. I was disappointed and started to lose confidence. But the fans were remarkable, they cheered and cheered and that gave me extra motivation,” he told a press conference after the race.

Meanwhile, the final round also saw Sabil Mohamad Ali Hanafiah of Team Motivasi charting his first podium win by winning second. “The race tonight has certainly been one of the highlights of my racing career. It feels like a dream (to win) but I’m glad it’s real,” exclaimed Sabil.

Third place winner, Mohammad Helmey Hamzah said, “Third is OK. This is probably the hardest race I’ve done. A lot of mistakes happened. This is a difficult moment for me, I cannot remember when I had a worse feeling in a race. Again, I want to thank God and my team for my win. I hope to do my best in the National level next month.”

Commenting on the race, Abdul Fatah said the championship, the first kind of Speedway racing event ever held in Malaysia is an ideal platform for youths to show off their riding skills. “Looking at the performance of the riders, I am confident that this sport has the potential to develop world class riders. We will discuss the possibility of building a Speedway circuit in Selangor at the state executive councillors meeting this week,” he said.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Sunday, 16 September 2007: Nazrie Ramli of Team Titiwangsa finally chalked up a win in the NFC Open Speedway championship after playing the bridesmaid in round 1 and round 2.

Nazrie clinched the top podium step of Saturday nights’ Round 3 of the Open Category held at the Speedway Circuit at the Family Park near the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex in the absence of previous rounds winner Rody Sofian Buang of Team Seri Putra who was out injured. Credit should however not to be taken from the 28 year-old rider as he had to endure breakdowns to his bike twice in the earlier preliminary heats. Mohd Azlan Abdullah of Team Nova made his first podium win to finish second while Team Motivasi’s Mohd Zulkhairi Johar was third.

“It's been a dream race. It was probably the most difficult race I have ever done as I could not relax for one minute with the (bike) technical failure and all. The pressure was on me all the time,” said Nazrie who now topped the overall standings with 34 points.

“I have been waiting for a long time. After tonight, I’ve got more confidence and looking forward to win the remaining round 4,” he added.
In the final round, Nazrie was involved in a very close fight with Mohd Azlan, Mohd Zulkhairi and Azmi Kaseran of Team Seri Putera. However, he had a good drive at the final corner to beat Mohd Azlan to the top of the podium.

“The race tonight has certainly been one of the highlights of my racing career,” said Mohd Azlan. “Everybody was extremely competitive and things are expected to step up again in Round 4. I want to work harder so that I can experience the feeling of being on the podium again,” said the former motocross rider.

With this win, Nazrie now joins 6 other riders selected for Speedway Malaysia’s JAWA 500cc bikes training programme. The other riders selected based on their winning performances in the NFC Speedway championships are Rody Sofian Buang (26), Muhd Helmy Hamzah (18), Mohd Abdussobur Turino (20), Mohd Haniff Borhan (21), Mohd Ariff Mohd Ali (21) and Azizi Anuar (24).

Speedway Malaysia’s consultant Hanifah Yoong said, “The first training session was held last Friday and the next session will be on Sept 21. Nazrie will join the six riders selected earlier and train under former British Speedway racer who is also Speedway Malaysia resident trainer Linden Warner,”

Other RMC batch 65 old boys (former batch mates of Hanifah Yoong) present were Dato' Abdul Malek Abdul Hamid, Abdul Latif Adlin and Abdul Rashid Ab. Rahiman and their families as well as Yoon Fook Sang who was Hanifah's MBSKL classmate in the 50s and 60s who came with his wife.

Rd 3 of the Under 25 championship found yet another winner in Azizi Anuar of Temerloh who beat round 1 winner Mohd Ariff (3rd this round) and round 2 winner Mohd Haniff (2nd this round).

JAWA 500cc demo on this night was done by Linden Warner only as Rody Buang was out nursing a road accident injury.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Sunday, 9 September 2007: Azizi Anuar of Team Samudera stayed out front to win Saturday nights’ Round 3 of the NFC Speedway Championships 2007 Under 25 category held at the Speedway Circuit near the Family Park at the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex.
Azizi beat previous Round 1 and 2 winners, Mohd Haniff Borhan of Nova Racing Team and Mohd Ariff Mohd Ali of Team Seri Putra. With this win, Azizi clinched a place in Speedway Malaysia’s JAWA 500cc bikes training programme with another five riders to prepare them to be Malaysia’s first representatives in the first Malaysian International Speedway Grand Prix to be held on 27 October.

“To win this (champion) trophy tonight is amazing. The other riders were really fast. It was an exciting race with a number of crashes and restarts. I’m glad all my efforts and training under Speedway Malaysia’s resident coach Linden Warner finally paid off. I dedicate this win to him, all my team mates as well as my family and friends who travel with me each week from Temerloh to Kuala Lumpur,” said Azizi.

Meanwhile, Mohd Haniff had a good drive off the final corner to narrowly beat Mohd Ariff to the second spot. This was enough for the 21 year-old to retain his championship lead with a 33 points total with one round to go. Azizi now lies second in the championship standings with 30 points while Ariff is third with 27 points.
"Those guys did a good job but Azizi was just a little better at the end. But to me, just like in the previous rounds, I felt my biggest challenge had to be Ariff. On off-race days, we are the best of pals, but during races I really had to work hard to distant myself from him. I’m glad my strategies worked and thank lady luck for my win tonight,” said Haniff.
Commenting on his performance, Ariff said, “Yes, Haniff was very lucky to win second as we were on very similar strategies and was separated by probably five to six centimeters. I have reached my best in Round 1 and will make sure I can be more competitive and do my best in the final Round 4.”
Two riders, Mohd Zamri Talib of Team Samudera and Shukry Hanis Haslin of Team Seri Putra both received minor injuries from crashes last night. They were sent to the HUKM Cheras for further check up and later discharged following treatment at the hospital.

Speedway Malaysia Consultant Hanifah Yoong explained, “Accidents are expected to be on the rise given the tight fight for all the championships and with such strong determination displayed by all these young former road warriors, we can only hope there won’t be any serious accidents and that the riders use their heads as well as their skills.”

A total of six teams competed in last night’s race. The teams are Team Titiwangsa, Team Maxi Alpha, Nova Racing Team, Team Seri Putra, Team Motivasi and Team Samudera.

The NFC Speedway championships, organised by the Malaysia Motorsports Organisers and Competitors Association (MMOCA) and promoted by Speedway Malaysia, is held every Saturday night at the Family Park near the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex until October.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Sunday, 2 Sep 07: Mohd Abdussobur Turino of Nova Racing Team won Round 3 of the NFC Speedway Championships Under 21 in the pouring rain at the Speedway Circuit at Bukit Jalil held last night. Abdussobur rode an almost faultless race and never looked under threat all the way to the chequered flag.

Second in Round 1 and Round 2 held in July and August respectively, Abdussobur marked a stunning return to the winners' podium and topped the under 21 overall standings with 34 points. “In the first part of the race it was light rain and there were a lot of people going fast but a couple of corners later they'd be on the ground, so you weren't too sure how hard to push. I’m glad I rode cautiously and very, very happy my strategy worked. I would like to dedicate my win to my family and friends who are present here tonight for their support,” he said.

“To win in front of all these people is incredible," exclaimed Abdussobur. "It's hard to explain the emotion I felt when I heard the crowds cheering for me on the last few laps. I need to say thank you to all of them,” he added.

Mohd Faizul Ferdaus Mahd Idros of Team Maxi Alpha finished second while Mohd Azlan Suparman of Team Seri Putra was third. Round 2 winner Muhammad Helmey Hamzah of Team Titiwangsa had to settle for fifth.

“I admit I was slightly pressured by the wet condition tonight. The slippery track particularly at the corners was really challenging. I also fell a couple of times during the heat and the final round and that was really tiring. I aim to do my best in Round 4,” said Helmey who is now second in the overall standings with 30 points.

Meanwhile, Speedway Malaysia Resident coach Linden Warner commented about the adverse racing condition, "All the boys from the semi finals onwards did really well in handling the very different track condition in the rain. It is not easy to race in the rain as the gravel gets stuck on their visors and visibility is poor in the lashing rain. Tonight also showed us all how mentally strong Abdussobur is and I think he is a star in the making."

Warner also remarked that the track which was built for all weather use held up really well in the first Speedway event held in the rain in Malaysia.

The championships, organised by the Malaysia Motorsports Organisers and Competitors Association (MMOCA) and promoted by Speedway Malaysia, is held every Saturday night until November. Last night’s race was the third of the four rounds for the Under 21 Category. The final round for the Under 21 will be run on September 22.

A total of six team competed in the race last night. The teams are Team Titiwangsa, Team Maxi Alpha, Nova Racing Team, Team Seri Putra, Team Motivasi and Team Samudera.

Speedway is a very exciting form of motorcycle racing where stripped down motorcycles race around an oval track on a surface of loosely packed crusher run stones compacted with shale. The sport started in the United States in 1908 and for the last 100 years has been confined to countries in Europe and America, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Sunday, 26 Aug 2007 – Rody Sofian Buang, 26, who is Malaysia’s first JAWA 500cc trainee and riding for Team Seri Putra, showed mastery skills to repeat his round 1 win in last night’s Speedway Malaysia’s NFC Open Championship round 2 held at the Bukit Jalil Family Park in Kuala Lumpur. Rody thus became the first Speedway double winner in Malaysia as the other two championships for under 21 and under 25 riders saw different winners after two rounds had been run. Nazrie Ramli of Team Titiwangsa finished second.

Earlier, second spot finisher Nazrie gave Rody a scare when he capitalised on Rody’s mistakes and beat Rody to second place in heat 11. Rody’s team-mate, Azmi Kaseran took the final podium spot with a determined charge in the final race to edge out Amli Jamat of Team Nova.

It was a very tense final race as Rody knew he had to protect his reputation for being selected to be the first JAWA 500cc trainee but his defeat in heat 11 did not affect him. Nazrie was buoyant after beating Rody in the heat and he knew he had to give his best with his team sponsor Datuk Astaman Abd Aziz, MP of Titiwangsa present at the event watching him. The final saw very close racing between the two but in the end Rody prevailed.

“It was not as easy a win as people may think as Nazrie put up a really good fight. We are all very happy that our team has two on the podium and we aim to win the championship for everyone who has supported us and the team,” said Rody after the prize presentation ceremony.

Nazrie thanked his sponsor, Datuk Astaman and his team members who gave him a lot of support but said, “Rody was just too good tonight but I will keep on trying to beat him in the remaining rounds.”

Azmi was overjoyed with his first podium finish and said, “I am very happy to accumulate the points. My objective is to finish in the top three in the championship.”

The championships, organised by the Malaysia Motorsports Organisers and Competitors Association (MMOCA) and promoted by Speedway Malaysia and Kuasa Maksima, is held every Saturday night at the Bukit Jalil Family Park from 8.30pm.

Admission is free for the Merdeka and Ramadhan month of August and September. During the fasting month of Ramadhan, the races will start at 9pm.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Sunday, 18 Aug 07: Mohd Haniff Borhan of Team Nova took full points for round 2 of the Under 25 NFC Speedway championship last night with the narrowest of wins from Mohd Shahril Sarahman of Team Motivasi. The top two in the grand final race was seperated by just 15cm at the line.

Third was Mohd Fizwan Mohd Ridwan of Team Maxi Alpha.

After the preliminary 12 heats, winner Haniff only accumulated 7 points with three seconds and a third out of a maximum 12 points for four rides. Haniff said, "I rode cautiously and accumulated enough points for the semi final and did enough to be second in my semi final for an all out assalt for the grand final. I am very very happy my strategy worked and I would like to dedicate my win to my family and Speedway Malaysia who gave me the chance and support to achieve this."

The leader after 12 heats with 11 points from 3 wins and a second, Mohd Emy of Team Titiwangsa fell in the semi final while round 1 winner Mohd Ariff Mohd Ali of Team Seri Putra had engine problem in his semi final while leading and failed to qualify for the final.

The night was not short of excitement and incidents as fourth finisher in the grand final, Abu Khaleel Samsun of Team Seri Putra had his 8 championship points removed by the meet referee, Matthias Rohde of Germany after he defied the referee's decision for exclusion in the re-run of the grand final race.

Kuala Lumpur, Sunday, 12 Aug 2007 – Muhamad Helmey Hamzah, 18 capped off a successful hunt when he scored his first career win in Round 2 of the NFC Speedway Championships under 21 last night.

Dominant from the start, Helmey of Team Titiwangsa topped the standings after the 12 preliminary heats with 3 wins and a second giving himself 11 points. Helmey then scored second in his semi final losing to Mohd Abdussobur of Team Nova but returned strongly to turn the table on Abdussobur in the grand final race. Asrul Khairin Azizan, who rides for the Team Samudera, rode consistently to finish third in the grand final.

Helmey who was third in round one 3 weeks ago now leads the championship with Abdussobur with 22 points each after round 2.

“Once again, I want to thank my team and mechanics for their perfect strategy. It was a great battle as most of us were out to win. Compared to Round 1, the other riders showed their strength in different parts of the track tonight. It’s not easy now, but I hope to maintain a win in the remaining three rounds,” said Helmey who finished third in Round 1 of the NFC Speedway Championships held on July 21.

The night race was exciting right from the start with most of the thrills provided by the top three of Helmey, Abdussobur and Asrul together with Round 1 winner Mohd Azlan Suparman of Team Seri Putera. Helmey was visibly faster in the corners while Abdussobur claimed advantage on the straights. Azlan, was luckless as he tried hard to defend his round 1 title but lost his place in the grand final when he mistakenly mistook the last lap flag for the chequered flag while leading his semi final race.

"When Azlan crashed out early in the heats, I cautioned myself to not be so reckless because at the end of the day, earning championship points was a lot more important to me than a round win. I gave my all to overtake Abdussobur in the grand final race and by the final two laps I knew that I had the win well in hand," added Muhamad Helmey.

Meanwhile, Speedway Malaysia Hanifah Yoong said the riders have shown tremendous progress over the past three weeks. “Speedway Malaysia will select five riders to train on JAWA 500cc race bikes to prepare them for the international Speedway scene. Therefore, we hope the government and private sector will come forward and provide the necessary support,” said Hanifah.

Linden, 44, has not raced a Speedway bike since 18 years ago and he was just getting into re-training his former skills. He is here in Malaysia as Ivan Mauger's assistant in coaching local riders in Ivan's absence. Rody Buang at 25 is Malaysia's first rider to try out the JAWA 500cc race machine as he debuts in public.

Both are far from their best but they both want to share with the Malaysian spectators how a Malaysian can start out on his career in Speedway racing...that Malaysians if given the opportunity and funding to allow them to train intensively, they can be on the way to race internationally in a few years' time.

In a few weeks' time, as both riders gather more speed we will find a video posted here which shows them doing the demo together...meanwhile enjoy this video clip of them in action on the night of 4th Aug 2007 at Speedway Malaysia...

Kuala Lumpur, Sunday – Rody Buang, 25, of Team Seri Putra stormed to a emphatic win in Round 1 of the Speedway Malaysia NFC Open Championship held at the Family Park circuit last night despite having to double up in making two demo appearances.

He charted 12 points to beat Nazrie Ramli of Team Titiwangsa who came in second with 11 points. Mohd Zulkairi Johar, of Team Motivasi finished third with 10 points.

“I am happy to win. It all points to hard work and discipline. There was no shortcut to success. A couple of smart strategies helped too,” said Rody. After a series of cautious preliminary runs, Rody turned on the power in the semi final and final and rode like a man possessed, finally worked his way up to take victory.

Rody’s victory completed a perfect opening round for Team Seri Putera whose riders Mohd Azlan Suparman and Mohd Ariff Mohd Ali won the Under 21 and Under 25 categories on July 21 and July 28 respectively.

It was also a memorable night for Rody as he also made appearances to become the first Malaysian rider to try out the World Championship JAWA 500 cc bike in public under the watchful eyes of Linden Warner who is Ivan Mauger’s assistant based in Malaysia.

The championships, promoted by Kuasa Maksima (a wholly owned subsidiary of Speedway Malaysia) and organised by the Malaysia Motorsports Organisers and Competitors Association (MMOCA), is held every Saturday night for 15 weeks until December. Last night’s race was the first of five rounds for the Open Category. The second round of the Under 21 championship begins on August 11.

OFF WORK TRAINING LED HOSPITAL ATTENDANT TO PODIUM WIN

Kuala Lumpur, Sunday 29 July 2007 – Consistent off work training eventually led Mohd Ariff Mohd Ali, of Team Seri Putra to clinch victory in the Round 1 of the NFC Speedway Malaysia Under 25 Championship held at the Bukit Jalil Family Park Speedway circuit last night.

Mohd Ariff, a hospital attendant in Malacca finished first his team-mate Shukry Hanis Haslin andTeam Nova’s Mohd Haniff Borhan to the top of the podium.

The final was keenly contested amongst the six finalists as positions changed hands frequently amongst the top four.

“I usually spend four hours training at the drift site near the Hang Jebat Stadium after my morning shift ends and also on my off days. It helps me to be mentally and physically fit,” said Mohd Ariff.

Although he felt drained at the end of the day, Mohd Ariff said he prefered to let the desire to win triumph over fatigue.

“Today’s win is fantastic. After 6 heats, I was already confident to secure a podium win,” he said.

At the end of the preliminary 12 heats, Mohd Ariff and team-mate Shukry Hanis both secured 11 points with three wins and a second each while Mohd Haniff charted 10 points with two wins and two seconds.

Entry to the Championship meetings every Saturday night is through purchasing the Championship’s souvenir book priced at RM6 each.

Children aged below 12 and accompanied by parents and the disabled are admitted free. Supporting the championship races are the JAWA 500cc demo races. Young Kiwi Speedway stars Sam Taylor and Andrew Aldridge again turned up to thrill the crowds last night with their JAWA 500cc bikes.

Speedway is a very exciting form of motorcycle racing where stripped down motorcycles race around an oval track on a surface of loosely packed crusher run stones compacted with shale. Speedway motorcycles perform without brakes, rear suspension or gears.

The sport started in the United States in 1908 and for the last 100 years has been confined to countries in Europe and America, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

We had Sam Taylor and Andrew Aldridge doing their exciting demo races with JAWA 500s 3 times...
We had the marching band to lead out all the 42 riders for U-21, U-25 and open championships...
We had the presentation of the riders to the VIPs followed by a stirring rendition of Negara-Ku, Malaysia's national anthem...
And more importantly enthusiastic and appreciative crowds...

The pitlane exit management was efficient and the races kept coming to thrill the crowds...
And all the night's races were closely fought...
As the U-21 riders vie for the championship trophies...
The champion of the night was crowned by YB Dato' Mohd Yasin, KSU KBS along with confetti showers...
Followed with post race press conference attended by all 4 TV stations and other media...

So, by any measure, Asia's first ever Speedway championship race, held last Saturday night on the 21st of July 2007 in Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Jalil Family Park was a resounding success!

And Speedway in Malaysia is set on it's road to be firmly established as a major motorcycling sport for the decades to come.

Kuala Lumpur, Sunday – Mohd Azlan Suparman, 18 became the first Speedway motorcycle champion in Malaysia when he clinched victory in Round 1 of the NFC Speedway Championships Under 21 event held at the Speedway Circuit at the Family Park near the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex last night.

His win makes him the first rider to chart success at a Speedway event held the first time ever in the country and the whole of Asia.

Azlan of Team Seri Putra made a splendid debut appearance clinching 3 points. Mohd Abdussobur Turino, 18 of Nova Racing Team finished second with 2 points while Muhammad Helmey Hamzah of Team Titiwangsa finished third with 1 point.

“I am thrilled with this win. In the beginning, I did not expect to secure the first win of the Championships because Abdussobur’s results after the 12 heats were stronger than mine. I would like to thank my team and all the mechanics that have continuously given me their support and worked hard to ensure a win,” Azlan told reporters.

At the end of all 12 heats, Abdussobur secured 11 points while Muhammad Helmey charted 4 points.

“Although I finished second, I am excited with the win and to be among the first Malaysians to chart victory in a speedway race,” said Abdussobur.

The championships, organised by the Malaysia Motorsports Organisers and Competitors Association (MMOCA), will be held every Saturday night for 15 weeks until December. Last night’s race was the first of five rounds for under-21 riders. The first round for under-25 riders takes place next Saturday while the first round for the Open category begins on August 4.

July 19, 2007 marks the day when the Malaysian Speedway circuit was certified fit for international racing after two Kiwi multiple champions, Andrew Aldridge and Sam Taylor rode the JAWA 500s in anger to test the first ever Speedway circuit in Malaysia.

They each rode the JAWAs in 2 sessions of 4 laps on the 19th and they rode together on the 20th in preparation for their 3 demo races for the big day on the 21st.

Meanwhile young Malaysian Rody Buang was given his first taste of the monstrous power of the 500cc JAWA under the watchful eyes on 9-time world Speedway champion, Ivan Mauger.

"He's as good as any European given a first test on the JAWA 500cc and I'm very very happy," beamed Ivan.

Rody cannot wait to test regularly on the 500s in between the Malaysian championship rounds run with the NFC Mk1 115cc Malaysian developed Speedway bikes.

Gates open at 6pm on Saturday, 21st July 2007 for the first Speedway race meeting at Bukit Jalil's Speedway Malaysia circuit located at the Family Park. In addition to the 12 heats, 2 semis and 2 finals spectators will be treated to 3 demo races by the Kiwi champions.

Today marks the 31st day of the beginning of construction of Malaysia's first Speedway circuit. Many can hardly believed that everything happened so quickly.

The track proper was ready to train some one hundred young Malaysian newcommers to Speedway in 2 weeks. With another 2 weeks, the track is almost ready to host Asia's first ever Speedway championship race series starting in 3 days from now on the 21st Jul 2007.

This will inevitably be a proud day for us all motorsports lovers in Malaysia as we celebrate our 50th anniversary of Malaysia's independence.

Last weekend saw the first official Speedway Malaysia practice sessions by the 6 entered teams

The teams' practice sessions were held on the Saturday 7 July and Sunday 8 July from 4pm to 7pm.

All the teams riders were coached by former British Speedway league pro rider Linden Warner under the guidance of Ivan Mauger from Australia. Linden was assisted by local road racing ace turned Speedway rider, Rody Buang from Klang.

The riders kept improving as usual and they were running in fives and sixes with close contact racing towards the later part of Sunday.

The Speedway track is coming along nicely...

With just under 2 weeks to go, the track is really looking good. We had the fence painted and the track surfaced rebuilt to last for 4 races before needing any grading stop. There are no longer any ruts as we thin down the top surface. The base is hard and holding well.

These pics were taken this morning showing the delivery of the 200KVA generator and the referee's tower. The catch fencing and electrical works will be completed on the week of the first race scheduled on the 21 Jul 2007.

Signages and decoratives will be up by the day before raceday.

Sixty eight newcomers to Speedway racing were put through their paces by 9-times world Speedway champion, Ivan Mauger.

Every rider in each session went out on their own after tips from Mauger and they later went out in close racing in pairs, threes and fours.

The Speedway master was well pleased with the vast improvements of all the riders with each outing.

A final 36 riders were selected along with 6 reserves for the 6 teams that have entered the inaugural Speedway championships for under 21, under 25 and open riders.

The teams will have more practices this Saturday 7 Jul and Sunday 8 Jul from 4pm to 7pm at the Family Park Speedway circuit at Bukit Jalil's National Sports Complex. All are welcome to watch F.O.C.

The opening event will be held at the Family Park Speedway circuit starting from 8pm on Saturday, 21 July 2007.

Speedway being new in Malaysia, we have to develop a Speedway bike for the entry level novice racers who have never raced in Speedway style before. In fact nearly all the riders who will start the championships have never raced in any form of motorcycle racing legally before.

Therefore the Speedway Malaysia developed 115cc NFC Mk1 will feature in the inaugural NFC Speedway championships for under 21, under 25 and open riders.

The Speedway seminar conducted by MMOCA represented by Ivan Mauger and Hanifah Yoong was held on the 29th July 2007 at the Ministry of Youth & Sports.

More than 120 participants turned up from all corners of Malaysia...mostly under 25 and many were in their teens.

There was a workshop for Speedway Malaysia officials in the morning and the seminar held in the afternoon lasted till well into sunset...the participants were enthralled by the plans revealed by Speedway Malaysia.

The 290M circuit, located at the Family Park of the National Sports Complex at Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur, took shape in matter of days and was completed ready enough for the first ever series of Ivan Mauger Speedway clinics to evaluate the Malaysian riders.

Speedway finally comes to Asia after 100 years via Malaysia!

After 100 years of Speedway motorcycle racing (started in USA in 1908) and very popularly followed in more than 40 countries in Europe, America and Canada as well as in Australia and New Zealand, it took a bunch of Malaysian motorheads to introduce Speedway into Asia through Malaysia.

The project paper was made in 2002 by MMOCA (Malaysia Motorsports Organisers & Competitors Association) and revised in 2006 where changes were made to develop the grassroots first before organising any international events or world championships.

Speedway Malaysia was launched on the 12th of May 2007 within just 2 months of very hardwork by a dozen or so key Malaysians comprising male and female motorheads.
